Titus Family Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection is completely digitalized and available on the Midwest Genealogy Center’s digital archival collections webpage. The collection contains correspondence between Square Holt and family members during his Civil War service while he served with the 26th Michigan Infantry (Union). Also included is a journal written by Melville Titus (brother-in-law of Square Holt), photographs of various Titus and Holt family members, and ephemera created by the both the Titus and Holt families.

Biographical / Historical
Square Holt was born in New York in 1838 and his family migrated to Michigan while he was a boy. Square married Hannah J. Lord circa 1860. During the Civil War, Square served in the 26th Michigan infantry and saw several battles including one in which he lost a finger. He spent most of his life farming in Ingham County, Michigan and passed away in Jackson County, Michigan on March 11, 1917 at the age of 79. His older sister was Samantha Holt.
Melville Titus was born in New York in 1825. His family migrated to Michigan in the mid-1830s. Melville married Samantha Holt in 1860. After marriage, Samantha and Melville resided in Ingham County, Michigan. Like Square, Melville was also a farmer and the Titus’ lived close to various Holt family members. Melville passed away April 12, 1895 at the age of 70 and was buried in Holt Cemetery in Dansville, Ingham County, Michigan.
