Scope and Contents

This collection consists of diaries written by members of the Joel M. Walker and Charles R. McCann families. These diaries describe the lives of farmers and their families. In addition to recording family life, these diaries also recorded historical events happening around Iowa and the United States. All diaries were written in Cedar and Muscatine counties in Iowa.

Joel Morris Walker was born May 27, 1850 in Belmont County, Ohio. His family migrated to Cedar County, Iowa in 1854. He married Maria Patience Gifford on September 8, 1875 in Cedar County, Iowa. They had 6 children; Inez Clare, Loretta M., Vera, Glen, Marzella, and Wilma. Joel was a farmer and continued to expand his farm land throughout his life. Joel died on December 19, 1926 and Maria died on November 5, 1917. Both were buried in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa.

Inez Clare Walker was born July 9, 1881 in Cedar County, Iowa. She married William R. Branson on December 23, 1903. She died in January 1937 and was buried in Springdale, Cedar County, Iowa. Vera Aileen and Glen Clifford Walker were both born September 7, 1885 in Cedar County, Iowa. She married Robert G. Pinney and Glen married Alma C. Pinney on September 24, 1907 in Cedar County, Iowa. Vera died on December 30, 1948 and Glen died on February 28, 1963. Both are buried in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa. Marzella Walker was born in January 1899 in Cedar County, Iowa. She married Fred Ridenour on November 30, 1909. Marzella died on January 6, 1971 and was buried in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa. Wilma Walker was born in 1894 in Cedar County, Iowa. She married Benton Rees Anderson on May 27, 1917 in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa.

Loretta M. Walker McCann, daughter of Joel and Maria Walker, was born on May 3, 1883 in Cedar County, Iowa. She married Charles Richard McCann on January 15, 1907 in Cedar County, Iowa. Loretta and Charles had three children; Duane, Charles, and Loretta. Loretta died on January 28, 1973 and was buried in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa.

Charles Richard McCann, son of John and Helen McCann, was born on January 15, 1880 in Iowa. He married Loretta Walker on January 15, 1907 in Cedar County, Iowa. Charles and Loretta had three children; Duane, Charles, and Loretta. Charles farmed land in Muscatine County, Iowa. He died on August 1, 1954 and was buried in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa.
